Open Mikes in San Francisco Bay Area - YAY!

ELLIE's "top two (three this month)" Dec 2005-Feb 2006 RECOMMENDATIONS-San Francsico

Open Mikes in San Diego Area - YAY!

ELLIE's "top two" Dec 2005-Feb 2006 RECOMMENDATIONS-San Diego Open Mikes
  • Jazz and Blues
    Cafe Bar Europa- Fridays JAZZ JAM SESSION 9pm-late - All instruments

      POSTED: 7/20/05
    • La Jolla/North P.B.
    • 873 Turquoise Street
    • Host Band: Jazzilla
    • 858/488.4200

    Jazzilla is a young upstart band here in San Diego. Very very cool guys (drummer was a bandmate of one of my SF students and he is very funny and a great drummer). Instrumentalists welcome to sit in, especially horns and guitarists. Singers, they want you to bring charts in your keys so what you willl want to do is have at least two charts to give (one to the bass player and one to the keys or guitarist). If you want to have horn charts made up, that would be great as well - it will make them like you more cause more peopel can sit in with ya! They are down to earth dudes and I like em a lot.

    They have: What you need - mike, etc. BRING: charts in your key (2 copies, I recommend)

  • Singer-songwriters & eccelectic

    Note: This place is killer. Great ambance, supportive crowd, good drinks, amazing space. Some of my students play here form tiem to time and I caught one of em recently - was really impressed with the venue. Perfect for Americana but other genres are totally OK. Very nice, there is great quality music, it is supportive and not competitive. Cool gig.

    If they like you, you may be asked to "headline" the open mike (ie: play a slightly longer set) on a specific date.

Headliners and up and coming performers regularly step up. All performers - whether storytellers, performance artists, singer songwriters, instrumentalists, solos, duos, trios, bands or, of course, comedians/ennes - all are welcomed with open arms...... • Hosted by either Khalil Shaheed Lady Margaret and the Gentlemen Sundays (I'm not sure) and Steve Gannon, guitarist Tuesdays (I'm sure).
        • 510/893-6215
        Vocalists welcome! A friend of ours - a bassist - goes here weekly on Sundays and you cannot stop him talking about it incessantly. I understand there are some great things that develope here and good players.

        If you want a less hard-core situation, go on Tuesdays which was recently started. Tuesdays you will feel less like you have just expereinced the musical equivalent to having been hit in the head with a frying pan if you are sorta beginning level.

        They have: a band paid to play there plus jammers

        BRING: charts unless you want to be made fun of in a public place
        =============

        Singers OK!!!! Yay! I've heard some great things about this joint.

        BYOCharts if you wanna not be at the mercy of what the band knows (although I'm told they seem to know a LOT)

        They have: a band, a mike

        =============

        Blue Lamp - Sun 9pm JAM SESH

        Singers OK!!!! Yay! THey do all kindsa blues here - 12 bar and other. I hear from our bass player who goes a lot that this is a terrific jam. Watch out for the doorman. He growls but usually won't bite. But still, you really oughtta be up to date on your shots anyway...

        They got a band & mike. Please know your key.
        ============= ELLIE RECOMMENDS - Go on 1st Sundays for Jeff Chin, an excellent pianist and accompanist and great atmosphere. STYLES: JAZZ, CABARET, BROADWAY, OTHER.

        Martuni's - every day after 9 -- SIT IN FOR VOCALISTS

        • 4 Valencia @ Market
        • starts 9pm - no sign up
        • Hosted by different pianists -all great
        • 2 drink min BUT...they have chocolate Martinis so that is no problem...
        • 241.0205
        Another excellent place for JAZZ singers but all other styles are OK, too - musical numbers, R&B, blues, etc. But remember you will be working with a piano. The place leans heavily toward being very very classy. One of my students was approached by a fairly well-respected agent there and I understand that is typical of this place.

        First Sundays - Song of the Month Club. Bring in two songs - one known to you and one you will be *Faking* your way through. Very nice environment with some really *great* singers coming in from time to time.

        They have: piano, pianist, mike - make sure they have it on, sometimes they forget.

        BRING: charts in your key

        Note: Make sure you get that mike on and that you are standing where you can hear yourself. Sometimes the sound is amazing and one time it sucked dead weasels through a garden hose. Wear something FABulous.
        =============

        Larry and Della's - Wednesdays SIT IN FOR VOCALISTS - TEMPORARILY DISCONTINUED
        Larry and Della's, unfortunately, recently were hit by a devastating fire that has forced them to temporarily close while repairs are made. DAMN! It's a bad year for jazz, guys...

        • Alameda - 2402 Mariner Square Drive
        • Hosted by different pianists -all great
        • 510/523.3474
        Another excellent place for jazz, R&B, blues, etc, singers - the band is terrific. Probably not musical theatre, though.

        They have: Everything you need to sit in with the band. Sometimes instrumentalists sit in as well as singers. They're a fun group and great to work with.

        BRING: charts in your key if it's a weird tune. Otherwise, you can call a few and the key you do and they will know it or fake it.

        Note: Stand in front of the monitor. I found I was having problems hearing myself when I sat in with them once.
        ==============

        Rosie O'Gradies - Tuesdays (each Tuesday eve) JAZZ JAM/Sit in for singers SAN DIEGO, CA

        • UPDATED June 24 2005
        • Hawley and Adams Ave - San Diego 92116
        • 7/8?
        • Hosted by jeremy, an awesome and young bass player (see his band "Al Howard and teh K23 Orchestra")

          They have: sound/mike

          BRING: charts (your key), your instrument (they do not have a keys)

          Note: This is a very mellow low-key thing. Many players who come here are early on in their careers and it is not intimidating. Some players are quite good. It is varied and all are welcome. If you wanna play something not in the standard key, you may need to bring it, though.
          ==============

          Rasselas California Street - Mondays (regulah!) & Thursdays (salsa) SIT INS FOR SINGERS

          • 2801 California @ Divisadero
          • 9.30pm
          • Hosted by Dee Spencer on Mondays and - um - *NOT* Dee Spencer on Thursdays
          • 415/567.5010
          Jazz jam with everyone on earth (who is currently in the restaurant, anyway) - standards. Sounds fun! I think *I* wanna go, actually.

          They have: ?

          BRING: your precious charts!

          Note: This is a reasonably well-known jazz joint so maybe a good way to get booked here might be come on down and bring a demo and business cards or something. Sometimes that works great cause most booking people won't listen to your crap even if they want to - go in person and a jam is a great way to do it.

          "Each second and last Thursday night of the month, you can head into Palo Alto and catch some great live music. The organizers, Chris and Steve, realized that there was nothing like this going on in the PA area and decided to give it a try. Well, I have only been to two of these so far but both were practically standing room only for most of the night! They definitely found a need and filled it. Plus, they are just a great couple of guys! Check out the Links page to get the lowdown."
