Note: I do not count Karaoke as
open mike.

ELLIE's "top two (three this month)" Dec 2005-Feb 2006 RECOMMENDATIONS-San Francsico
Jazz and Blues This is brand new and just sent in by the host. Poetry will also be OK (sign up to read poetry at 8.30) Kinda like in the 60's.
They have: mike, a NICE stage and plenty of room, good drinks.
BRING: charts in your key
Note: This place is brand new. Please write and let me know how you like it. And a note about ettiquette if you are new to the scene of playing out. Club owners tend to care
primarily about how many drinks move on a night when they have music. And Club Deluxe is a great place to buy drinks so please
buy at least one drink even if it is just beer - it is the polite thing to do in consideration of the management having jazz so show your
support (by becoming a booze hound like me! No, wait don't! But buying a drink or two is the right thing to do).
Jazz and Blues This is brand new and supposed to be great - swing by with you charts (in your key).
I think the combo is Larry O'Leno's and Christopher Copeland tells me they are terrific. I need
to check it out myself but email me with your thoughts when you go, K?
They have: GRAND piano, mike, kitchen open late, and (my fave) great cocktails.
BRING: charts in your key
Note: Not sure what the sound is like so just make sure if youy are a beginner - be sure
that you can hear yourself out of teh monitor (speaker) before you start, K? Otherwise you
WILL suck, I guarantee it! Might be easy to get a slot cause it is brand new!
Canvas Cafe - Wednesdays
OPEN MIKE (OPEN MIC) - All genres (seen classical, jazz, blues, Americana, Punk, Alt Rock, Alt Country, Accordian, it is wild!)
BRING: You and your instruments (if any)
Information updated 22 July 2003. I understand from my students who go
there that it is nice but TOTALLY crowded with GOOD people. There is
a good attitude but one of my students got bumped to the following week
because there were to many performers! Canvas is a nice place.
mike begins. Pretty hip!
Jazz and Blues Jazzilla is a young upstart band here in San Diego. Very very cool guys (drummer was a bandmate of
one of my SF students and he is very funny and a great drummer). Instrumentalists welcome to sit in, especially
horns and guitarists. Singers, they want you to bring charts in your keys so what you willl want to do is
have at least two charts to give (one to the bass player and one to the keys or guitarist). If you want to have
horn charts made up, that would be great as well - it will make them like you more cause more peopel can sit
in with ya! They are down to earth dudes and I like em a lot.
They have: What you need - mike, etc.
BRING: charts in your key (2 copies, I recommend)
Lestats - Mondays
OPEN MIKE (OPEN MIC) - All genres (seen classical, jazz, blues, Americana, Punk, Alt Rock, Alt Country, Accordian, it is wild!)
BRING: You and your instruments (if any)
Get there early - sometimes it fills. I love to go and listen since my piano
player is in INDONESIA!!! But it is totaly worth going to listen. Robyn Henkel and
Gregory Page make appearances regularly and both are amazing. Donations accepted.
Hotel Utah -
Mondays OPEN MIKE (OPEN MIC)
They have: what you need - call them if you have a question but it seems
pretty complete. They gotta pianer!
BRING: ?
Note: This place is killer. Great ambance, supportive crowd, good drinks, amazing space. Some of my students play here form tiem to time and I caught one of em recently - was really impressed with the venue. Perfect for Americana but other genres are totally OK. Very nice, there is great quality music, it is supportive and not competitive. Cool gig.
If they like you, you may be asked to "headline" the open mike (ie: play a slightly longer set) on a specific date.
The Grind (Fort Bragg - get the gas card) - Friday (2nd Fri each month) OPEN MIKE (OPEN MIC) SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA

"For over a year, The Canvas' Wednesday Open Mic has been growing, attracting amazing new talent and larger and larger audiences of locals who appreciate the excellent musicianship found in other locals. If you're a musician, comedian, or poet looking for a welcoming audience, you won't do better than this open mic, which has grown to be one of the Bay Area's best attended. And, you could win something, even if you don't perform: El Mundo Bueno Studios (www.EMBStudio.com) continues to generously donate 4 hours of free recording time awarded in a drawing held at end of the evening (you must be PRESENT to win). All Performances are recorded live to CD and made available to the artists upon request.

BRING: ?
I spoke with Stacey briefly a little while ago and she was very positive and supportive. I have an idea this is a nice place to be. Stacey mentioned that the orgnisation who is responsible for bringing you this open mike is called "Just Plain Folks", an international and growing group of people focused on music and playing it with monthly meetings helping each other with musical projects and stuff like that. They host open mikes, too! Lots of great networking & performance opportunities. Here's their site:They have: sound/mike
BRING: your situation
Note: writeup in the reader here-http://www.sdreader.com/published/2005-04-14/nightspot.html
Blind Melons - SAN DIEGO, CA - MONDAYS (each)

Winstons - SAN DIEGO, CA - MONDAYS (each)
They have: sound/mike
BRING: your own sweet self
Note: This is some kinda weird ass thing with Jose Sinatra? I normally would not include it cause it seems
karaoke-ish but it has sufficient Weird Factour to warrant a listing. If you wanna attempt to figure it out, go
here.
Bird Kage - Sun 7-11pm JAM SESH!
They have: a great band, mike, I think they are Old Guys which means they
probably can do anything you call but bring charts if you really really REALLY
want to do somehing unusual.
Eli's Mile High Club - Monday 8pm JAM SESH!
They have: great chops! BYO Charts if you don't call a blues.
Dorsey's Locker - Wed 4-7pm (also have a Sat session 4-7pm - see below) JAM SESH!
They have: great chops on Sat's. Wed's I dunno too much about although it is
definitely worth checking out - someone write me and lemme know.
Blake's - Mon 9.30pm JAM SESH!
They have: ?
BRING: charts in your key Bluesville - Sun 7-minight (just added Tues 9pm as well) JAM SESH
If you want a less hard-core situation, go on Tuesdays which was recently
started. Tuesdays you will feel less like you have just expereinced the musical
equivalent to having been hit in the head with a frying pan if you are sorta
beginning level.
They have: a band paid to play there plus jammers
BRING: charts unless you want to be made fun of in a public place
Judi's Place - Thursdays 7.30-10pm JAM SESH!
Mario wrote me on the 6th of Dec 2005 to let me know aboutn his new improved jam sesh that had moved to Judi's. People
tell me it's a pretty cool deal.
Beach Chalet - Tues 7.30 -- SIT IN/JAM SESH
BYOCharts if you wanna not be at the mercy of what the band knows (although
I'm told they seem to know a LOT)
They have: a band, a mike
Blue Lamp - Sun 9pm JAM SESH
They got a band & mike. Please know your key.
Martuni's - every day after 9 -- SIT IN FOR VOCALISTS
First Sundays - Song of the Month Club. Bring in two songs - one known to you
and one you will be *Faking* your way through. Very nice environment with some
really *great* singers coming in from time to time.
They have: piano, pianist, mike - make sure they have it on, sometimes they
forget.
BRING: charts in your key
Note: Make sure you get that mike on and that you are standing where you can
hear yourself. Sometimes the sound is amazing and one time it sucked dead
weasels through a garden hose. Wear something FABulous. Larry and Della's - Wednesdays SIT IN FOR VOCALISTS - TEMPORARILY DISCONTINUED
They have: Everything you need to sit in with the band. Sometimes
instrumentalists sit in as well as singers. They're a fun group and great to
work with.
BRING: charts in your key if it's a weird tune. Otherwise, you can call a few
and the key you do and they will know it or fake it.
Note: Stand in front of the monitor. I found I was having problems hearing
myself when I sat in with them once. Rosie O'Gradies - Tuesdays (each Tuesday eve) JAZZ JAM/Sit in for singers SAN DIEGO, CA
They have: sound/mike
BRING: charts (your key), your instrument (they do not have a keys)
Note: This is a very mellow low-key thing. Many players who come here are early on in their careers and it is not
intimidating. Some players are quite good. It is varied and all are welcome. If you wanna play something not in the
standard key, you may need to bring it, though.
Rasselas California Street - Mondays (regulah!) & Thursdays (salsa) SIT INS FOR SINGERS
They have: ?
BRING: your precious charts!
Note: This is a reasonably well-known jazz joint so maybe a good way to get
booked here might be come on down and bring a demo and business cards or
something. Sometimes that works great cause most booking people won't listen to
your crap even if they want to - go in person and a jam is a great way to do it.

Notes from their website:
"Sweetwater Open Mike Night Sweetwater's Open Mike has quickly become one of the Bay Area's most popular Open Mike stops, thanks to outstanding and continued support from the wonderful community of talented artists and faithful clientele. The vibe is always charged without being pretentious. First-time performers are challenged within the supportive bond of the Monday night "Family". Headliners and up and coming performers regularly step up. All performers - whether storytellers, performance artists, singer songwriters, instrumentalists, solos, duos, trios, bands or, of course, comedians/ennes - all are welcomed with open arms...... Step into the limelight. It is emotional, passionate, enlightening, fun, energizing - in short - it's a howl! Come and be a part of the Open Mike Family! This show has a little something for everyone! (and in this town, you never know who might be sittin' in) "

Email or call before going - haven't heard from them recently (6/24/05)
"We're set up with a PA and Mikes -- if you need amps, drums, or
anything else, bring them. "Full bands are welcome but stage time is limited, so
reserve a time slot well in advance by responding to this email. Stage time for
other performers is on a first come, first serve basis. Check us out at the
Triangle Lounge located on Fillmore Street (in Cow Hollow) between Lombard and
Greenwich. Doors open at 8:00 pm and the music begins around 8:30 pm and usually
ends around midnight. When you get there, ask for Rick, Rich or Michael and
they'll get you sorted out. If you have any questions, email me. 21 and over
only. "

acoustic artists are welcome as well, as it is not mandatory that you be loud."

=============
I have no idea about this place - keep me posted if
ya go.
=============
They have a sound guy! SOUND GUUUUUUY! I suppose that
would mean they also have a sound system as well. I think this is very much
geared toward singer-songwriters but I couldn't be sure.
=============
Note: this is a brand new venue. Well, it is under new ownership as it is being passed from generation to the next generation.
I think they are hiring bands, too... so...

Blues jam. Great audience, historic and amazing blues
club.
=============
Singers on Wed's but call for info on Sat's sessions.
I understand Sat's are very hard core with a sometimes not too gracious
audience.
=============
Blues like it used to be at this historic blues club.
=============
Vocalists welcome! A friend of ours - a bassist - goes here
weekly on Sundays and you cannot stop him talking about it incessantly. I
understand there are some great things that develope here and good players.
=============
=============
Singers OK!!!! Yay! I've heard some great things about
this joint.
=============
Singers OK!!!! Yay! THey do all kindsa blues here - 12
bar and other. I hear from our bass player who goes a lot that this is a
terrific jam. Watch out for the doorman. He growls but usually won't bite. But still, you really oughtta be up to date on your shots anyway...
=============
ELLIE RECOMMENDS - Go on 1st Sundays for Jeff Chin, an excellent pianist and accompanist and great atmosphere. STYLES: JAZZ, CABARET, BROADWAY, OTHER.
Another excellent place for JAZZ singers but all other
styles are OK, too - musical numbers, R&B, blues, etc. But remember you will
be working with a piano. The place leans heavily toward being very very classy.
One of my students was approached by a fairly well-respected agent there and I
understand that is typical of this place.
=============
Larry and Della's, unfortunately, recently were hit by a devastating fire that has forced them to temporarily close while repairs are made. DAMN! It's a bad year for jazz, guys...
Another excellent place for jazz, R&B, blues, etc, singers - the band
is terrific. Probably not musical theatre,
though.
==============
==============
Jazz jam with everyone on earth (who is currently in
the restaurant, anyway) - standards. Sounds fun! I think *I* wanna go, actually.
==============
Heard some great things about this joint
from some good players. They have: a band!
=============
They have: a band!
=============
This place sounds great, This
joint is reportedly mainly cabaret and I betcha a million bucks it is cool.
However, I could be wrong. Also, who knows if I'll get into a fight with the
doorman, so ya hafta take that into consideration as well.
=============
This club is annoying but I've heard good things
about the open mike

"Each second and last Thursday night of the month, you can head into Palo Alto and catch some great live music. The organizers, Chris and Steve, realized that there was nothing like this going on in the PA area and decided to give it a try. Well, I have only been to two of these so far but both were practically standing room only for most of the night! They definitely found a need and filled it. Plus, they are just a great couple of guys! Check out the Links page to get the lowdown."
